Conrad Vogler earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Brockport State College in 1954 and 1960. He taught elementary school at the State Agricultural and Industrial School for delinquent boys from 1956 to 1958 and then fifth grade in Newark until 1964 when he joined the Buffalo State faculty. Always looking to further his education, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Buffalo in 1971 and remained on the Buffalo State faculty until retiring in 1996. During his tenure at Buffalo State, Dr. Vogler taught in a number of areas. His specialties included Sociology of Religion and Sociology of Sport. He is perhaps best known for his book, The Sociology of Sport, written with Steven Schwartz. As the computer age developed, so did Conrad Vogler. He continued to develop his scholarship until retiring in 1996. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement. He passed away in 2003. Conrad Vogler is fondly remembered by the faculty at Buffalo State and his loving family. His wife Ann has established the Conrad Vogler Award in his memory. It is given to the undergraduate who is considered most promising as a Sociologist. The recipient must have demonstrated commitment to the discipline and at least a 3.00 GPA in Sociology. Commitment is demonstrated by outstanding involvement in the discipline such as conference attendance and presentations outside of the classroom. Many of our awards are given to graduating seniors. This one, however, is designed for a student who will be entering his/her junior or senior year.
