Biography
Dr. Joseph Cleary is an Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department. Drawing on ethnographic and historical methods, Dr. Cleary’s research examines the forces that shaped 21st century urban institutions — including public schools, employment, and housing — and the people inside them. He has published in the British Journal of Sociology of Education, Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, Journal of Autoethnography, and American Journal of Distance Education, among other outlets. Dr. Cleary’s classes include Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Sociology of Education, Qualitative Methods, and Introduction to Sociology. Dr. Cleary likes to integrate teaching, research, and community outreach to channel his and his students’ energies in ways that maximize the social benefit and utility of a coherent sociological praxis.
