It is very important that sociology majors begin the advisement process early. Meeting with your adviser regularly is an important part of the educational process. It will help you to navigate the major more smoothly and graduate on time. If you don't know who your advisor is, contact the department and we will help you. You can also check on the bulletin board outside the department office.
Students have presented projects at conferences off campus as well as at the annual Student Research and Creativity Celebration. Our associated research center includes the Center for Health and Social Research and the Center for China Studies.
Our students have worked with the Community Academic Center, the West Side Community Collaborative, and many other volunteer and service-learning sites throughout the city. Ask your professors how you might incorporate your service-learning interests into your current courses.
The Sociology Department offered its first study abroad in Chile trip in June of 2013. Students earned 6 credits, lived with a host family, took Spanish and Sociology classes, and toured the city of Santiago and its surrounding areas. Dr. Krieg will accompanied the group. Please contact him for more information on short and long-term study abroad programs.
Student have the option of completing the Sociology BA by taking either Sociological Internship (SOC488) or Senior Seminar (SOC490). A wide variety of internships are available; some may coincide with employment. Dr. Welborn is the Internship Coordinator for the department and can help you with any questions you may have.
A number of our students have formed a Sociology Club that helps to sponsor programs and lectures on campus. If you are interested in learning more about the club, please contact Dr. Stewart. The department is also affiliated with Alpha Kappa Delta (the international sociological honor society). Students are encouraged to join the club and learn more about their eligibility for the honor society.
Each year the department hosts an annual banquet to celebrate the outstanding efforts of our majors. Department awards are given to several students and students with the highest Grade Point Averages are eligible for induction to the International Sociology Honor Society (AKD). Students, family, and friends are invited to attend this annual event which is usually held in mid-April.
